Beyond the citadels he built or reinforced throughout France, Vauban acted as a profoundly humanist and visionary gentleman. He was attentive to protecting the lives of his soldiers, to helping starving peasants crushed by taxes, and also to defending the freedom of worship of Protestants persecuted following the king's decision to revoke the Edict of Nantes. It would take the Enlightenment for the idea of tolerance to gain traction, championed by Voltaire. What might seem a paradox for this honorable man—loyal to his King yet concerned for the well-being of his fellow citizens—resonates powerfully with us today. This theatrical "mise en abyme" transports us to the present day with a writing competition about Vauban launched by the Ministry of Culture, which pits AI against a troupe of penniless artists. The play is loosely based on Alain Monod's book, "Vauban ou la mauvaise conscience du Roi" (Vauban or the King's Bad Conscience). Written and directed by Sylvie Thiénot, assisted by Nathy Busson and Mathieu Maadel. Tickets required; reservations required at 06 31 00 93 71
