THE MECHANISM OF TIDES
This phenomenon is due to the combined effects of the moon and the sun on liquid masses. It results from the laws of universal attraction (Newton’s law). In a 24-hour cycle, there are two low tides and two high tides. The duration between these variations is about 6 hours. These ebb and flow (i.e. tidal currents) do not occur at a constant speed, just like the variation in water height. This amplitude is determined by the tidal coefficient graduated from 20 to 120 which can be found in the tide tables.
