Tourism in Belle-Ile
Tourism began in Belle-Ile in the mid-19th century, notably with Flaubert’s visit in 1847, the island’s first ‘tourist’, followed by the advent of sea bathing, the arrival of the railway in Auray in 1862 and Quiberon in 1882, Claude Monet’s stay in 1886, the presence of the first hotels listed in tourist guides in 1889, and Sarah Bernhardt’s love at first sight for the Pointe des Poulains in 1894!
The Belle-Ile-en-Mer Tourist Office was created in December 1911 as an association under the 1901 law, 74 years before the success of Laurent Voulzy’s song Belle-Ile-en-Mer, Marie-Galante in 1985.
