Philippe Lauras (1915–2011), a graduate of the École Boulle and an interior designer until the age of 66, devoted himself passionately to painting. Philippe Lauras (1915–2011), a graduate of the École Boulle and an interior designer until the age of 66, devoted himself passionately to painting. Curious about all painting techniques—gouache, oil, charcoal, pastel, ink—he drew inspiration from his surroundings, the music he listened to while painting, and the presence of his wife, his muse. His work evolved toward a non-figurative expression, always guided by the search for composition and rhythm. He found an echo in the work of the great masters of modern art such as Kandinsky, Miró, Klee, and the Delaunays. Throughout his life, he produced more than 2,000 works and filled 90 sketchbooks. Belle-Île, a land of inspiration. The Lauras family discovered Belle-Île in 1959, during a holiday in Kerloréal, before acquiring a house in Samzun in 1965. It was on this island that Philippe Lauras gave free rein to his painting, exploring the light, shapes, and colors of the Belle-Île landscapes. He also participated in the renovation of the church in Locmaria, offering his advice, plans, and contributing to the restoration of statues. Until his death in Chatou in 2011, at the age of 95, he never stopped painting. His wife, Chantal, who remained faithful to Belle-Île, returned every summer, recognizable by her daily swim in Samzun, a symbol of her unwavering attachment to these places. From Land to Shores; Through his figurative works, created in the heart of nature, Philippe Lauras invites you to discover the island, across fields and along paths that lead sometimes to hamlets and villages, sometimes to the rocky coast and beaches. The omnipresent light throughout the seasons dances in the vegetation, sparkles on the water, or washes over the hay; you can almost smell the scents… The light caresses and transforms, it fragments, giving rise to an abstract vision that the artist develops in his studio. Light and color merge, dance in rhythm; the form is multifaceted, appealing to our imagination and our senses. Enjoy this journey, from land to shore.
