La Pointe des Poulains

5 ideas for touring through the seasons

Located at the extreme North of Belle-Ile, the Pointe des Poulains is one of the most pleasant places of Belle-Île-en-Mer to enjoy nature and discover the fauna, the flora but also the local history. Museums, hikes, night visits or sea excursions, the activities organized around the Pointe des Poulains are varied!

Free access and open all year round!

A magnificent panorama on the ocean and the wild coast, the quietness of the place is an invitation to reverie.

The Pointe des Poulains offers a multitude of spectacular viewpoints that change, as the months go by, according to the seasons. Each season gives it a different hue and atmosphere:

Spring is the best time to contemplate the lush vegetation of Belle-Ile. Some of the typical flowers of the Atlantic coastline, such as the maritime artemisia or the gorse flowers, come into bloom, give color to the coastal path and that special coconut scent…

In the summer, the mild weather allows you to enjoy a “picnic” break or a swim on the beach of Les Poulains.

In autumn, it is at sunset that you should go to La Pointe des Poulains. The orange and purple hues that set the sky ablaze at sunset make for an unforgettable picture!

In winter, you can watch the raging sea crashing against the cliffs and the foam of the waves that comes crashing on the beach…Magical!

Idea n°2

Coastal Trail

Hike the most beautiful part of the coastal trail

Several hiking routes from or to La Pointe des Poulains will allow you to explore the coastal path.

The route between Sauzon and Les Poulains is perfect for walkers with limited time. This short 6 km route, with no major difficulty, takes about 1.5 hours to complete. The route passes by many small beaches such as Port Puce, Deuborh and Penhoët. These creeks, well sheltered from the wind and the waves, are good places for swimming as well as for lunch breaks!

For hikers who wish to go on a longer hike, a 12 km loop (about 3 hours) will make you discover the wild coast up to the beach of Ster-Vraz. This cove forms a natural harbor with its neighbor Ster-Ouen, and is one of the most beautiful anchorages on the island for boaters!

BON À SAVOIR: from the Easter vacations to the All Saints’ Day vacations, line 1 of the Belle-ile Bus network will allow you to reach Sauzon or Le Palais from La Pointe des Poulains.

Poulains Point at dusk

One of the most beautiful sites to enjoy the sunset

Because of its location, at the extreme northwest of Belle-île-en-Mer, the Pointe des Poulains is the perfect place to enjoy a sunset!

At sunset, the cliffs of the wild coastline cut out majestically and you will have a front row seat to see the sun disappear into the infinity of the ocean.

In season, you can also discover a large number of activities offered at night on the site. We particularly recommend

  • the Sarah Bernhardt fortress tours organized at night with the storm lamp
  • .

  • the theater evenings of the Chats Huants troupe, which take place outdoors, starting at 6:30 p.m., every weekend from May to August.

And to extend the evening, go to the restaurant À L’Ouest – Bistrozza, located just a stone’s throw from La Pointe des Poulains, where you can enjoy tapas and homemade pizzas…undoubtedly the best on the island!

Between History and Nature

Tours to understand and know everything

La Pointe des Poulains, a hybrid place is divided into several spaces, each of which in its own way will allow you to learn more about nature (fauna and flora) and historical heritage.

  • La Maison du Littoral shows the natural wealth of Belle-Ile with interactive animations. This visit is perfect for children. On the ground floor, the Vagabondez en espaces naturels space presents the protected areas of Belle-Ile with interactive games and fun exhibits. Upstairs, the Dive into Marine Protected Areas space broadcasts a 20-minute short film that was made entirely underwater. The film, with its slow motion, and its musical atmosphere shows all the beauty of the seabed of the wild coast.
  • Sarah Bernhardt Space: Museography tracing the career of Sarah Bernhardt and her summers spent at the Pointe des Poulains.
  • The Sarah Bernhardt fort, summer residence of the actress, has been preserved identically and thus allows you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Belle époque.

By kayak, paddle, zodiac or motorboat

Sail to the Pointe des Poulains

The coast between the port of Sauzon and the Pointe des Poulains is particularly suitable for a sea ride. Suitable for sea kayaking and Stand Up Paddle, as the sea is rather calm, and the creeks along the way are perfect for photo breaks or to take a bath. From July to September, starting from the beach of Port Puce, Vives-Eaux offers rentals of Paddle and Sea Kayak single or two-seater.

It is also possible to discover the coastline by zodiac or motor boat. Maritime excursions will make you discover the North coast and its natural spaces, such as the ornithological reserve of Koh Kastell or the cave of the Apothicairerie. Several organizations offer half-day or full-day trips: Atmos Air, Escapade Marine and Tour d’Îles.
