Sarah Bernhardt discovered Belle-Île in 1894, at the age of 50. Her friend, the painter Clairin, told her so much that she finally decides to accompany him. Under the effect of love at first sight, she acquired a disused military fort at Pointe des Poulains. For thirty years, she will stay there every year to escape the grueling Parisian life and rest there, escorted by a crowd of artists and personalities. At the end of the long journey of twelve hours by train from Paris, in her private car and several hours of crossing by the mail which unloads her in front of her home, she is deposited on the beach with a man's arm. She offers her most prestigious guests, including King Edward VII of England, a succession of parties and lively evenings, in the midst of her extraordinary pets. In 1922, after a final tour, ill and crippled, she put her properties up for sale. She died in Paris the following year without being able to fulfill her last wish to rest for eternity facing the sea, on this island she loved so much. The Pointe des Poulains site has been the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2000, managed by the Community of Communes of Belle-Ile-en-Mer (CCBI). Listed as a Historic Monument. Since 2005, in the Nature Space, a museographic section allows the discovery of this remarkable space. Books and postcards are available in the shop section. The lighthouse is also open to the public. The main room, fully restored, is dedicated to natural spaces. It describes the fauna and flora of the islet, as well as the main stages in the restoration of the landscape. Since April 2007, the fort and the Espace Sarah Bernhardt have invited you to go back in time with an audio-guided tour of around one hour (for a fee). The life and work of the tragedian are retraced in the villa, while the interior of the fort has been identically refurbished.
