Conférence : Comment la nature et l'homme ont modelé la baie du Mont-Saint-Michel

By Bruno Caline, geologist, passionate about the study of marine sediments in the bay, with publications on this subject and field trips to the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. Since time immemorial, the landscape of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel has constantly evolved. Why and how have the combined actions of nature and humankind shaped this coastal fringe, subject to the action of exceptionally powerful tides? To answer this question, it is necessary to recall the geological heritage of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and then reconstruct the history of the human activities that have taken place in this unique natural setting. This conference focuses on the traces left by these successive developments, such as the exploitation of salt in the Dol marsh during the Gallo-Roman period, the establishment of the monks who built on Mont-Saint-Michel in the Middle Ages, then the numerous fishing activities offshore and on the foreshore, the cultivation of oysters and then mussels, and finally the preservation of the maritime character of Mont-Saint-Michel.
