"There is no wealth but men." Reservations at 06 31 00 93 71. Beyond the citadels he built or consolidated throughout France, Vauban behaved as a deeply humanist and visionary gentleman. He was attentive to protecting the lives of his soldiers, to rescuing starving peasants crushed by taxes, but also to defending the freedom of worship of Protestants persecuted following the royal decision to revoke the Edict of Nantes. It was not until the Age of Enlightenment that the idea of tolerance progressed with Voltaire. What could have been experienced as a paradox for this honest man—both loyal to his King while being concerned for the well-being of his compatriots—is a powerful challenge to us today. The theatrical "mise en abyme" allows the troupe to share their questions with the audience and to draw parallels with current events. The play is loosely inspired by Alain Monod's book "Vauban or the King's Bad Conscience". Written and directed by: Sylvie Thienot Performers (in alphabetical order): • Serge Albagnac • Sylvia Bonzon • Françoise Enjalbert • Lucas Giard • Clémence Gourlaouen • Christian Krier • Marie-Rose Lefèvre • Mathieu Madel • Sylvie Thienot Costumes: Catherine Nicolaï Graphics: Valérie Gautier Music: Francis Montuelle and Sylvie Thienot Set design: Gurvan Kérignard
