“A seal that grows up among surfers, a dolphin that prefers to live in ports rather than among its own kind, a group of orcas that “attack” sailboats: the maritime environment has the wonderful thing about it that interactions with large mammals are more evident there than on dry land; seals and cetaceans willingly come into contact, particularly since the end of large-scale whaling operations. This book goes to meet them and retraces the “personal” lives of four of them with an exceptional destiny, because they share it with humans. You, Zafar, Kalon and Gladis are characters from the Atlantic coast whose trajectory we will read is often bumpy, sometimes tragic, always disturbing. Their journey shifts the category of “deviance” in an animal kingdom that is generally considered to respond to the laws of instinct and survival. Throughout these biographies, new questions emerge: what relationship is possible with a wild mammal? Do these animals pursue lives that take them beyond the boundaries of their species? In contrast, it is the policies of conservation as much as those of fishing, pleasure boating or tourism that are discussed: how to react, care for, preserve, coexist with these singular mammals that challenge us.
