By Nicolas Baron, associate professor of history and geography, PhD in contemporary history, and author of numerous works on animal history. The gray wolf has returned to Brittany in recent years, sparking passionate reactions among the Bretons. The relationship between humans and Canis lupus lupus has, in fact, always been very complex. Admired for its physical abilities and social behavior, the wolf was also the object of visceral hatred due to its attacks on livestock and even people, which, in the eyes of the authorities, justified the implementation of a veritable eradication policy. Looking at this centuries-old history allows us to better understand the current issues surrounding the return of the wolf to Brittany, France, and Europe.
