By Korentin Denis, historian, professor at UCO, author, lecturer, and scientific advisor for Dazont ar Glad. Breton sailors engaged in coastal and deep-sea navigation. Whether they were sardine fishermen, tuna fishermen, Newfoundland fishermen, Cape Horners, or whalers, their temperament was expressed through the objects they crafted at sea. These included items for individual needs, for the crew or for navigation, as well as small, functional pieces for the home. There were also travel souvenirs, some more exotic than others, kept for oneself or given as gifts. And then there were the trophies, those often picturesque catches that immortalized maritime adventures, which were embellished. Not to mention the various types of models, votive offerings, and other objects inspired by the sea. All these pieces have their own history, which relates not only to their manufacture and use, but also to the shipboard traditions confined to the sailor's horizon.
