South of Belle-Île, the village of Bédex is home to Laurence Caron's studio, a modest haven that prefers to remain hidden, weathering the winter storms and far removed from the summer bustle. Stacks of stretched canvases, cotton, linen, or jute, bear witness to a story of water, earth, and sky, with the horizon as its only boundary. As far as the eye can see, the movements and flat planes of color evoke emotions and feelings connected to everything around us, especially the ocean. A deeply inspired abstract expressionism, influenced by the light of Belle-Île, her subjects are numerous, her textures ever-changing, and her techniques varied: oil, acrylic, ink, and collage. Finally, to explore the material even further, Laurence Caron transforms clay into a small, exclusive collection of sculptural objects and unique earthenware pieces (lamps, candlesticks, vases, etc.) that reflect erosion, the passage of the ocean, and all that lives within it. Born in Paris into a family of artists who have been part of the Belle-Île landscape for three generations, Laurence Caron spent her childhood drawing, making, tinkering, gluing, kneading, tearing, and combining all sorts of materials before pursuing studies in literature. She began a professional career in classical music and then in audiovisual production before life events brought this path to a halt. A sense of choice emerged, a return to her roots, a need to reconnect with what is essential. To allow herself this, Laurence enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where she studied drawing; passionate about materials, she also trained in ceramics in Parisian workshops. Naturally, Laurence established her studio on Belle-Île to fully pursue her artistic exploration. Each year, this work is punctuated by temporary exhibitions across the island. • Port Goulphar, within the elegant setting of the Hôtel-Thalasso Le Castel Clara, features a selection of Laurence Caron's paintings under the title #361millionkm2 (the total surface area of the Earth covered by oceans and seas). • Laurence Caron's studio: Visits by appointment.
