With the soloists, the orchestra, the Young Artists and the choir of the Festival. Bach's great Passions, Saint Matthew and Saint John, remain among the most powerful and dramatic sacred works in the repertoire. At the center of the Passion are the eleven chorales, each sung as a testimony of faith, originally by the congregation of the faithful. Bach harmonizes these simple chorales in a surprisingly chromatic way, undoubtedly avant-garde for the time. The Passion is in two parts, which are divided into five scenes, confirming its theatrical or even operatic structure. The biblical commentary is sung first by the Evangelist, tenor, with the other soloists singing the words of Jesus, Peter, Pilate and other minor characters, the choir becoming the crowd - the soldiers, priests and people.
