AIPS (Association, Information, Prévention, Santé) Lends freely for disabled tourists and hikers:
>> Two tiralos (wheelchair adapted to sand and water),
>> One Joëlette (wheelchair with 1 wheel powered by 2 people).
The AIPS wants to:
-Support the independence and quality of life of disabled people
-Make the beach accessible to disabled (wheelchair, seniors…)
-Make disabled to enjoy the site safely
-Help disabled to discoverer new sensations, stimulating touch with new elements (sand, water, waves)
-Try to change the look of tourists, who are, just like disabled people, sensitive to the joys of the beach
-Participate in the prevention of psychological effects due to the isolation of disabled guests.
Le tiralo
Is a wheelchair with two functions :
Towed by a companion, it rolls on the sand and makes possible the walk on the waterfront. It floats in water and is very stable. A companion has to assure the movement and safety. From there, it’s possible for swimmers wishing to leave the Tiralo to batch freely.
Where? When?
Plage des Grands Sables near the rescue station, East entrance.
From 1PM to 7PM
From 01/07 to 01/09
Under the supervision of lifeguards.
Only when the sea is calm ( green flag)
Lifeguards phone number: 02 97 31 89 79
Take Le Tiralo at Lifeguard Station. The Transfer (wheelchair/Tiralo) has to be made at the Parking Place.
Then cross the road and down the block ( 2 attendants are needed)
A parking space for persons with disabilities is located near a ramp that provides access directly to the beach. On the beach, a carpet load balancer is available to help the transfer.
Advices for tourists:
The beach has no shady spot: think about the necessary equipment (umbrellas, suntan oil, water). There are no toilets nearby.
The temperature of water in Les Grands Sables ranges between 16 and 19°: Bathers who are sensitive to cold can therefore bring their own wetsuit. Bathing must be very gradual. You have to wet your body (head and abdomen) before going completely in the water.
Put the life jacket supplied by rescuers and remain always accompanied when you're swimming in Le Tiralo.
