Sarah Bernhardt discovers Belle Isle in 1894, at the age of 50 years. His friend, the painter Clairin, has talked so much that she finally decides to accompany him. Under the effect of a stroke of lightning, she acquired a disused military fort at the tip of the Colts. For thirty years, she will spend each year trying to escape the Parisian life and to rest, escorted by a crowd of artists and personalities. At the end of the long journey of twelve hours by train from Paris in his private car and several hours of crossing through the mail that arrives at the home she is deposited on the beach man's arm. She offers its prestigious guests, including King Edward VII of England, a series of festivals and lively evenings, amidst his extraordinary pets. In 1922, after a final tour, sick and infirm, it is selling its properties. She died in Paris the following year without having been able to realize his last wish to rest for eternity facing the sea, on the island she loved so much. The site of the tip of the Colts is the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2000, managed by the Community of Municipalities of Belle-Ile-en-Mer (CCBI). Registered under the Historic Monuments. Since 2005, in Nature Space, a museum part allows the discovery of this remarkable space. Books and postcards are available in the shop part. The lighthouse is also open to the public. The main room, completely restored, is dedicated to natural areas. It describes the flora and fauna of the island, and the main stages of landscape restoration. Since April 2007, the fort and the Espace Sarah Bernhardt invite you to plunge into the past through an audio tour about an hour (fees apply). The life and work of the actress are outlined in the villa, while inside the fort was refurbished to the same.
