A number of famous painters have chosen to make Belle-Île their home, including Claude Monet, John Peter Russel, Georges Clairin, Matisse and Vasarely. The island still holds strong appeal for many artists, for whom its lights, colours and changing reflections are an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration.
The sea and nature also provide the raw materials for a variety of artistic creations. Pebbles gathered on the beach are turned into jewellery; the mussels prised from the rocky coast become the hulls of model boats; driftwood comes back to life as decorative objects. Yet other materials and techniques are used to produce quality artistic creations, waiting to delight visitors to the island.
